Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Will Not Rule Out Move for Erling Haaland

By | February 25, 2021
  • Manchester United are among the betting favorites to sign Erling Haaland when the striker leaves Borussia Dortmund
  • Manchester City (+400) are slight favorites
  • Haaland may leave Dortmund this summer if the team fails to qualify for next year’s Champions League

Kylian Mbappe may be prepared to take the title of “world’s best footballer” from Lionel Messi, but the dynamic PSG forward is not without competition. Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland is making quite the name for himself in the Bundesliga.

Haaland arrived in Germany in December of 2019, but the Norwegian sensation has been linked with a move to England since before his Dortmund career even began. Manchester United was among the teams interested in plucking Haaland away from Red Bull Salzburg two years ago, but the Red Devils were ultimately spurned in favor of Dortmund.

While Haaland has done nothing but score since making the switch, those links to the Premier League remain. Manchester United are still the most likely team to make a move for Haaland if he does decide to leave Germany. The fact that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a fellow Norwegian doesn’t hurt the English giants’ chances of attracting his signature in the future.

In fact, Solskjaer hasn’t ruled out a move for Haaland, either. Dortmund are no sure thing to appear in next year’s Champions League amid some domestic struggles, which could have the 20-year-old looking to leave for greener pastures. While Dortmund have been excellent in terms of developing talent over the years, the club has also seen no shortage of big-name players ultimately leave in big-money moves.

Could Haaland Leave?

If Dortmund do miss out on Champions League play, Haaland may well sign elsewhere as early as this summer. When asked about the possibility of his club renewing their interest in the striker, Solskjaer said,

“When you have had kids and players through as a coach, you follow them and I keep in touch with Erling. It’s great to see him become the player he has become and [how] he works to improve all the time. He’s a Dortmund player – we just wish him well there and let’s see what life brings later on.”

Solskjaer was an assistant with Molde when Haaland’s professional carer was just beginning. Haaland has gone on to score an incredible 43 goals in 43 games with the Bundesliga side. He has a release clause that could allow him to leave as soon as June of 2022, but an earlier move is very much within the realm of possibility.

Solskjaer added,

“You know I can’t speak about Erling, he’s with Borussia Dortmund and it’s disrespectful to talk about it apart from I know him and speak to him. Who wasn’t interested in him a year ago? Everybody would say you take the best players in the world.”

United are set to face Real Sociedad in Europa League play on Thursday in the round-of-32. United will be playing without Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek for the second leg, but the Red Devils should have no trouble finishing off the Spanish side after winning the first tie, 4-0.

Manchester City Favored for Haaland

United are in the hunt for a Premier League title this season, and winning the league for the first time in several years would certainly improve the side’s chances of attracting world-class talent in the transfer market.

United should face plenty of competition if Haaland does become available, however. Manchester City are looking to find a long-term replacement up front for Sergio Aguero, and the Citizens certainly have the financial wherewithal to move for Haaland if they so choose.

Soccer betting sites have listed City as +400 favorites to sign Haaland this summer, while United face slightly longer +600 odds. Juventus (+1000), Real Madrid (+1000), and PSG (+1200) are the other major European sides that figure to have interest in the young striker.
