By | July 6, 2021

Chinese Ministry of Finance has reported a 3.4 per cent year-on-year growth in the state-owned lottery sales in May, the local lottery news declared yesterday.

Chinese lottery market shows a consistent growth during the first five months of 2021, finally recovering from the drastic decline in sales in 2020. From January to May, the total revenue from national lotteries reached CNY143.83bn. It is a 59.2 per cent growth from the corresponding period last year.

Sports Lotto revenue increases while Welfare lottery sales drop

The total lottery sales have reached a CNY30.2bn mark in May 2021, which is a CNY981m and 3.4 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2020.

The major operator, the Sports lottery, in particular, had a 24.1 per cent year-on-year revenue growth, with sales reaching CNY18.88bn. At the same time, another significant market player, the Welfare lottery, has witnessed a 19.2 per cent year-on-year decline in sales this May, collecting only CNY11.31bn. Experts believe this is a result of a CNY9.53bn year-on-year decrease in the digital-type lotteries sales.

Nevertheless, the digital lottery games still comprised most of the collected revenue (45.3%). Other major lottery groups included sports prediction lotto (10.13bn yuan), instant lottery (4.63bn yuan), and others.

All 19 provinces of the People’s Republic of China saw a rise in lottery sales this May. The regions of Sichuan, Henan, and Guangdong had the biggest year-on-year sales increase of CNY354m, CNY362m, and CNY466m respectively.
