ACMA Calls for Blocking of Offshore Lottery Websites

By | November 17, 2021

The Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) has raised concerns about lottery websites illegally operating in the country. According to the news about the Australian lottery sector, the Authority is going to ask local Internet providers to block the offshore lottery platforms.

The ACMA investigation has found two operators – Red Fox Lotto and We Love Lotto – offering raffle tickets at major overseas online lotteries and didn’t have an Australian license.

Thus, the Authority has ruled that both lottery companies have violated the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act and requested to ban the websites from the Australian online networks.

The ACMA spokesperson Fiona Cameron stated that the measure is necessary for safeguarding players from potentially dodgy ops.

These are going to be the first lottery website bans enforced in Australia. However, the Communication and Media Authority has been calling for the blocks of illegal casino sites since November 2019.

According to the most recent ACMA report, the regulator has targeted 55 websites for banning throughout the 2020-21 financial year. This led to at least a 90% decrease in the number of Australian visitors on these platforms. Ms. Cameron claims that it is a positive step towards eliminating illegal gambling in the country.
