WTA Stuttgart 2022 Day Five Schedule, Betting Odds & Picks

By | April 22, 2022

Thursday was a mostly good day for favorites at the WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany, with six of eight favorites winning their round of 16 matches to advance to Friday’s quarters.

Six Seeds Advance to Quarters; Samsonova Joins Former Champ Siegemund in Last Eight

Of the eight favored players–all of the seeded players in the field–the only two to fall were from the same quarter of the field, #4 seed Maria Sakkari and #6 seed Karolina Pliskova.

2017 Stuttgart champion Laura Siegemund, who currently comes in at 231st in the WTA rankings, was up 6-4, 3-1 against Sakkari when the favorite retired due to illness.

It is the first time since her 2017 win that Siegemund will be in the quarterfinals of this tournament, as she lost in the second round in 2018, 2019, and 2021 (the tournament was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic).

Siegemund will face 31st-ranked Liudmila Samsonova, who knocked off Pliskova, the 2018 champion, 6-4, 6-4. Samsonova won her first WTA title last year in Germany at the grass-court German Open in Berlin, and she is a solid favorite to make the last four over the former Stuttgart champ.

The other three quarter-final matches will feature seeded players. Top seed and tournament favorite Iga Swiatek will meet #8 seed Emma Raducanu, #2 seed Paula Badosa will face #7 seed Ons Jabeur, and #3 seed Aryna Sabalenka will take on #5 seed Anett Kontaveit.

With Pliskova being bounced, Siegemund is the only former Porsche Tennis Grand Prix champion left in the field.

Below, we take a look at today’s schedule and odds and provide predictions and picks for what stands to be an action-packed day in Stuttgart.

WTA Stuttgart 2022 Quarter-Final Predictions and Picks

2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Quarter-Final Predictions

Badosa to defeat Jabeur in three sets

Badosa opened her clay season by reaching the final of the Credit One Charleston Open in Charleston, South Carolina. She looks ready to have another great clay run after a stellar showing on the surface in 2021, and she will be too much for Jabeur in a tight match.

Sabalenka to defeat Kontaveit in three sets

As was backed in yesterday’s Stuttgart picks, Sabalenka did indeed lose a set to Bianca Andreescu in her round of 16 match. But she dug in deep and pulled out a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win to advance.

But while she was able to get it done against a player who was just playing her second match of the year, she will have even more of a fight against Kontaveit.

However, Kontaveit has yet to beat Sabalenka, who has beaten her in all four meetings on the WTA Tour. It might not be pretty but look for Sabalenka to keep that perfect record going.

Siegemund to defeat Samsonova in straight sets

Samsonova has looked good in her two matches, double-bageling Chloe Paquet in her first match before upsetting Pliskova yesterday.

Siegemund isn’t just a feel-good story here, though. She has played very well against two quality opponents already, having defeated 27th-ranked Tamara Zidansek, a 2021 French Open semifinalist, in straight sets in the first round and was well on her way to another upset win in straight sets before Sakkari retired.

Look for the former champion to pull a third straight upset to book a semifinal showdown with world number one Swiatek.

Swiatek to defeat Raducanu in straight sets

It is not often that you will see this much of a disparity odds-wise in a match between two seeded players. But along with being the superior player on this surface, Swiatek is in blistering form right now, to put it mildly.

Since losing in the round of 16 to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai in February, Swiatek has not lost. Wednesday’s win over Eva Lya marked her 20th consecutive win, with sixteen of those wins–including the last dozen–coming in straight sets.

2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Quarter-Final Betting Picks

Best WTA Stuttgart Value Pick of the Day:

Siegemund to defeat Samsonova – (+165 at BetRivers)

After two impressive performances against Zidansek and Sakkari, Siegemund is good value to make it to the Stuttgart semis for the first time since her title win in 2017.

Best WTA Stuttgart Bets of the Day:

Kontaveit/Sabalenka over 22.5 games (+104) and over 2.5 sets (+132) – both at BetRivers

Last year in Stuttgart, these two players met in the quarters, with Sabalenka claiming a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win over Kontaveit. Kontaveit has made a big leap since then, winning five titles and making three other finals, including the final of the 2021 WTA Finals in Mexico this past November.

So, Sabalenka can certainly expect an even fiercer challenge from Kontaveit this time around, and this represents Kontaveit’s best chance to beat Sabalenka, especially with how much Sabalenka is struggling on her serve.

But even if Sabalenka pulls out the win–which she has been backed to do–expect this match to go the maximum three sets. Both of Kontaveit’s matches in Stuttgart have gone three sets, as did Sabalenka’s opener against Andreescu.

Kontaveit’s last four matches have gone three sets and at least 23 games, while four of Sabalenka’s last five have gone at least 23 games, with three of those going three sets.
