Mariners vs. Yankees (August 3): Will Castillo have a winning debut for Seattle?

By | August 3, 2022

After picking up a big win last night in the Bronx, the Seattle Mariners will break out their shiny new trade acquisition in their quest to leave the Big Apple with a big road series win over the New York Yankees.

The home team claimed a 7-3 win in Monday’s series opener, but the M’s struck back last night with a nail-biting 8-6 victory. In the bottom of the ninth, Andres Munoz loaded the bases with two outs but struck out Gleyber Torres to shut the door.

In today’s series finale, All-Star pitcher Luis Castillo will make his debut with his new team after Seattle acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Cincinnati Reds last Friday.

Will he have a winning debut against one of his rumored suitors? Or will Gerrit Cole inject some life into his AL Cy Young Award hopes with a gem against Seattle?

Is the Under the Play at Yankee Stadium?

You can never tell how a pitcher is going to fare when switching leagues, but Castillo has the benefit of his current form and previous success this season against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

In his last five starts with the Reds, Castillo was 2-0 with 1.59 ERA. In 34 innings, he allowed just six runs, 23 hits, and 10 walks and struck out 41.

One of those five starts was in this venue. He received a no-decision in Cincinnati’s 7-6, 10-inning win, but he certainly did his part to limit the Yankees. In seven excellent innings, he allowed just two hits, one run, and four walks and struck out eight.

Cole wasn’t at his best for much of July, but the Yankees have still done a pretty good job of winning even when he has had some struggles.

Last Friday, he allowed five runs and seven hits in six innings against the Kansas City Royals, but the Yankees scored 11 runs and won comfortably.

For the season, the Yankees are 15-6 in Cole’s starts, and every month has been a winning month for him. But he can’t afford to have another subpar outing in this matchup, given the form that Castillo was in prior to his trade to Seattle.

Mariners vs. Yankees Prediction: Mariners to win

Mariners vs. Yankees Picks: Mariners ML

As I said, you can never tell how a pitcher will fare in this situation. But with Cole in subpar form recently and Castillo in excellent form ahead of his Mariners debut, I really like the value with Seattle here.
