The PGA’s third major tournament of the season — the 2022 U.S. Open — came and went over the weekend, resulting in a memorable victory for Matt Fitzpatrick. Now, golf fans are turning their attention to the year’s final major: the 2022 British Open.

Also known as the Open Championship, this year marks the 150th that the event is being held. Once again, it will be hosted at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland from Thursday, July 14 to Sunday, July 17.

Collin Morikawa won the 2021 edition of the tournament when it was held at Royal St George’s, finishing two strokes ahead of Jordan Spieth for the victory. Only time will tell who walks away as the victory this year.

Although it’s anyone’s guess as to who will walk away the winner, the latest 2022 British Open odds on FanDuel Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook and BetRivers help paint a clearer picture as to what could go down at St Andrews.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the British Open in 2022?

Rory McIlroy (Best Value 2022 British Open Odds: +900 at FanDuel Sportsbook & Caesars Sportsbook)

When it comes to the 2022 British Open, it’s clear that oddsmakers are in agreement that Rory McIlroy is the odds-on favorite. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering that not only has he played well this season, but he’s also a returning tournament champion.

McIlroy won the Open Championship for the first time in his career back in 2014. He finished 17-under-par, ending the event two strokes ahead of both Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia for the major victory.

Aside from that win, McIlroy also has four other top-five British Open performances. Unfortunately, he’s been slumping lately, finishing T-46 or worse in his last three entries.

When it comes to the 2022 PGA TOUR, few have performed as well as McIlroy has. The 33-year-old veteran has only failed to make the cut once in 11 events, placing T-25 or better nine times.

Seven of those finishes saw McIlroy placed inside of the top 10, including a T-5 showing at the U.S. Open. He’s also won two tournaments thus far and has finished eighth or better in five of his last six events.

McIlroy isn’t showing any signs of slowing down this year, making him a force to be reckoned with at the 2022 British Open.

Jon Rahm (Best Value 2022 British Open Odds: +1200 at FanDuel Sportsbook)

While McIlroy is the unanimous favorite, Jon Rahm isn’t too far behind him, coming in with the second-best 2022 British Open odds on each of the three highlighted sportsbooks.

Much like McIlroy, Rahm has been as consistent as they come this year. Although it took him some time to heat up, he’s now finished inside of the top 25 in 71.4% of the events that he’s entered this year.

Rahm has really begun building momentum lately, placing T-12 or better in four of his last six events. One of those showings involves him winning the Mexico Open at the start of May.

Rahm doesn’t exactly have the most extensive Open Championship history. He’s entered the tournament five times, finishing T-44 or worse in each of his first three entries.

On the other hand, he’s placed T-11 and T-3 in 2019 and 2021, respectively, showing that he might have what it takes to go all the way this year. Few golfers are as talented as Rahm is, making it interesting to see how he performs at St Andrews next month.

Scottie Scheffler (Best Value 2022 British Open Odds: +1400 at BetRivers)

It’s hard to ignore just how consistent Scottie Scheffler has been on the 2022 PGA TOUR. That’s why he’s more than deserving of being one of the 2022 British Open favorites.

Scheffler has won a whopping four tournaments so far this season, with his most recent victory coming at the 2022 Masters Tournament. Although he hasn’t won since then, the 25-year-old has placed T-18 or better in five of the six subsequent events that he’s entered — including being the runner-up at the Charles Schwab Classic and U.S. Open.

As for the Open Championship, Scheffler has only participated once in his career. He made his British Open debut just last year, finishing T-8 and eight strokes back of first place.

That’s a small sample size to go off of, but the truth is that Scheffler consistently wins when the deck is stacked against him and it wouldn’t be shocking if he left Scotland as the 2022 Open Championship winner.
