2022 ATP Swiss Open Gstaad Betting: Odds, Draw & Predictions

By | July 19, 2022

This week’s Swiss Open carries fewer ATP rankings points than the week’s other event, the Hamburg European Open in Germany, the tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland has the edge on star power.

Young hotshot Carlos Alcaraz is far and away the biggest name in the draw in Hamburg, and the draw also features another top-ten player in Andrey Rublev.

The draw in Gstaad is led by French Open finalist Casper Ruud, who is the defending Swiss Open champion and the top seed this year.

And it also includes three former Swiss Open champions in #2 seed Matteo Berrettini (2018), #4 seed Albert Ramos Vinolas (2019), and Dominic Thiem (2015), who is trying to work his way back up the rankings after a rough year.

Ruud is the favorite, but with Thiem, Berrettini, and some talented clay-court players in the draw, the action in Gstaad will be worth following all week long.

2022 ATP Swiss Open Gstaad Tournament Predictions & Picks

Which four players will make the semifinals?

Casper Ruud

Jaume Munar, who took Diego Schwartzman to five sets in the second round of the French Open this year, could very well make things interesting in the quarters.

But Ruud should have no problem navigating two matches to reach the last four in Gstaad. Any other result would be a major surprise.

Albert Ramos Vinolas

Since winning the Cordoba Open in Argentina in February, Ramos Vinolas reached the semis of two other ATP 250 events, losing to Sebastian Baez at that stage in both the Chile Open and the Estoril Open in Portugal.

Well, Baez is in Hamburg this week, and while Ramos Vinolas didn’t really make any major waves in the bigger clay events this year, this is a level at which he can make a good run.

Dominic Thiem

There have been a lot of lows for Thiem over the last year-plus, but the light at the end of the tunnel might now be visible.

Last week in Bastad, Sweden, he defeated Emil Ruusuvuori for his first win on the ATP main tour since May 12, 2021. He then followed it up with a win over Roberto Bautista Agut, before losing to Baez in three sets in the quarters.

Playing well and building his match fitness–all three of his matches last week went three sets, and he logged over eight hours of match time–will be big this week and going forward for Thiem.

I was tempted to pick him to win the title this week, but next week’s tournament on home soil in Kitzbuhel, Austria might be a more realistic aim in that regard. You have to crawl before you walk, and I expect him to continue making strides on that journey this week.

Matteo Berrettini

It looked like 2022 could be a big year for Berrettini after he reached the Australia Open semis, but this will be just his sixth tournament since then.

Things have gone well for him when he has been on the court though. Along with his run in Melbourne, he returned from a three-month layoff by winning the Stuttgart Open and defending his Queen’s Club title in back-to-back weeks last month.

Who will win the tournament?

Casper Ruud

Ruud is one of the best in the business on this surface, but it is worth noting that the top seed has not won this tournament since Feliciano Lopez won the title in 2016.

That doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot when it comes to this year though.

Ruud will be pretty motivated this week after being upset by eventual champion Francisco Cerundolo last week in Bastad.

With a favorable road to the final, early in the week is the best time to make a play on him to win the tournament, as his odds will only shorten from here.
