An exciting 2021-22 English Premier League season is nearing its conclusion, with only two more rounds of games remaining before the campaign comes to a close.
For much of the season, the Premier League title race has been a two-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool. Manchester City are seeking a second straight league title and a fourth in five seasons. Liverpool, meanwhile, are vying for their second title in three seasons, which would see them draw level with fierce rivals Manchester United for the most top-flight titles in English football history.
With the season’s end just eight days away, here’s how the top end of the Premier League table shakes out.
Current English Premier League Table (Entering Round 37)
- Manchester City – 89 points
- Liverpool – 86
- Chelsea – 70
- Arsenal – 66
- Tottenham – 65
Today, Liverpool will take on Chelsea in the 2022 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London. That means that their penultimate league fixture at Southampton, who sit 15th heading into the weekend, will now take place on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will keep hopes of a quadruple alive with a win at Wembley, but Manchester City can end those dreams and put a hand and a half on the trophy on Sunday, as they have their own trip to London to take on seventh-placed West Ham.
The final round of Premier League fixtures will take place on Sunday, May 22. The two important fixtures with regards to the title race will see Liverpool host eighth-placed Wolves and Manchester City host Aston Villa, who are currently 12th in the table.
Manchester City currently have a goal difference of 72, having scored 94 goals and allowed 22 through their 36 games. Liverpool, meanwhile, have scored 89 and allowed 24 for a goal difference of 65.
That is a decent cushion for the moment, but if City were to lose to West Ham, it would open the door to being caught or passed on goal difference.
That said, with a three-point lead and a superior goal difference with two matches remaining, City are in a strong position to retain the crown, and current Premier League title odds reflect that.

Unsurprisingly, Pep Guardiola’s side will head to the capital as heavy favorites for all three points. But the Hammers could certainly pose a real challenge to City and just might throw a twist in the tale.
Their impressive campaign has lost some steam down the stretch, which may partly be due to their run to the Europa League semifinals. But they have Premier League wins over Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham at the London Stadium this season, and they beat a strong City side on penalties in the EFL Cup round of 16 back in October.
And West Ham do enter Sunday’s match knowing that a win would see them move past Manchester United into sixth on goal difference ahead of the final round. Sixth means an automatic place in the Europa League group stage next season, while seventh would drop them to the third-tier Europa Conference League.
That is ultimately the toughest fixture of the four left between City and Liverpool, without a doubt. So, that is something for the Reds to hang their hopes on.
But they certainly can’t dismiss their midweek road trip to St. Mary’s Stadium. Southampton may be mired in a bad run at present but aren’t to be dismissed.
In 13 league matches this season against the current top seven, the Saints have picked up 15 points–two draws against City, a home win over Arsenal, a home draw and an away win vs. Tottenham, two draws against Manchester United, and a home draw and an away win vs. West Ham.
Will there be any twists, turns, and drama in this season’s Premier League title race over the next eight days? Or will Manchester City clinch another top-flight title without any real fuss?
